Water- Get Involved
People of Faith Take Action
- Avoid toxic chemicals and their spillage. Become more aware of your actions
when handling chemicals such as oil and gasoline. Avoid spills
and risks of runoff and contamination. Switch to phosphate-free detergents and other
less hazardous household products. Switch traditional incandescent bulbs for compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs), reducing the demand for mercury-intensive production that pollutes our waters. Encourage manufacturers of products you use to stop using raw toxic materials.
- Reduce daily water consumption. Click here to see the NCC water conservation page. Quick helpful
hints: 1. Turn faucets off while brushing your teeth or washing dishes. 2. Check indoor and outdoor faucets for leaks
or drips. 3. Adjust nozzles and shower heads to conserve water.
- Consider alternatives to bottled water, especially if you are planning a conference, retreat, or party! Need ideas? Click here to check out this brochure made by the Presbyterian Church-USA and Living Waters for the World.
- Show a documentary to raise awareness in your congregation. We recommend Troubled Waters, A United Church of Christ documentary on water's sanctity and what people of faith are doing to protect this life source.
- Advocate to protect our waters on the local or community level. Learn
more about potential sources of contamination in your community
and take action to reduce and/or regulate these sources.
