Stories of Sustainability
Eco-Stewards at Montclair Presbyterian Church: Book
group
In a frenetically paced society, a Simple Living book group offers
members a space to reflect on sustainable lifestyle changes in an
affirming atmosphere. Eco-Stewards at Montclair Presbyterian Church
in Oakland, CA had a study series using the book Simpler
Living, Compassionate Life. Pat Schwinn, a member of Montclair
Presbyterian Church Eco-Stewards, believes that an important outcome
of the group was “the affirmation we were not alone in our
desire to find time to spend with family and friends enjoying simple
- non-material - pleasures.”
Karen Ray Gibson, another member of the Eco-Stewards book study,
shares
Exploring the ideas of slowing down and valuing
our relationships with people over the acquisition of material
wealth caused us to pause and appreciate each other at a deeper
level. We became more aware of the political connections to our
food supply. Several of our members realized that they were just
a generation from their farming families and how agriculture had
changed so much in such a short time. We made connections
between local decisions and those at a global level. Becoming
more aware of the impact of our decisions on others through the
readings and discussions caused us to develop a deeper understanding
of living simply. I highly recommend this experience.
