Stories of Sustainability
Chestnut Hill United Methodist Church:
Worship and Celebration
Chestnut Hill United Methodist Church in Pennsylvania embodies
sustainable living through its congregational life and worship.
The congregation focuses on faithful living in God’s creation
through almost monthly sermons and the church celebrates special
festivals every few months, such as the Feast of St. Francis, Earth
Day Sunday, and Covenant with Noah Sunday. The church has
helped an indigenous community in the Philippines to buy land in
order to become self-sufficient. At home, the church purchases
all renewable energy from the local utility for its operations,
recycles electronics in additional to traditional recycling efforts,
and serves fair-trade, organic coffee at church functions. Finally,
a program of the church publishes an eco-justice bulletin insert
series, which is distributed to churches across the country.
