- SEPTEMBER 2010 CREATION CARE WORKSHOP FOR SIOUX COUNTY CHURCHES
The concluding event for this current phase of Creation Care at ARC will be to host a Saturday workshop for all Sioux County churches, in conjunction with the annual “Community Visitation Day” for the Garden of ARC. This workshop will showcase the sound Creation Care initiatives that emerge at ARC as a result of this project (and similar initiatives at other churches), with the goal being to inspire many other Sioux County churches to take such initiatives. The expenses for this workshop, and all the initiatives noted above, will be completely covered by our RCA grant supplemented by the surplus from a November 2007 environmental conference that was hosted at Northwestern College, for which a number of our members provided leadership. - Bethesda Lutheran in Ames, IA replaced incandescent lighting with compact fluorescent lighting, installed computer controls to heat and cool occupied rooms, purchased new energy efficient freezers, and installed new storm windows over the stained glass windows.
- Cathedral of St. Paul in Des Moines, IA. The co-chair of the Care of Creation committee wrote in and shared this story with us: At St. Paul's, we started preparing for Earth Day at the end of February 2011, when we began including factoids about safeguarding Creation in the Cathedral's newsletter and weekly Online Bulletin. During Lent, we had two Potlucks around the themes of "Real Food" and "Buy Fresh, Buy Local." Interesting facts about Caring for Creation and its valuable food, water, and
human resources were placed on a small tent on each table. This is the prayer we said for grace at the "Real Food" potluck, written by one of our youth: “All knowing and gracious God, we thank you for the fruits of the earth and the nourishment they give us. We ask you to help us embrace the Earth and its beauty that we may preserve what you created, to glorify you, the Creator, Savior and the guiding Heavenly Light. Amen.” Offerings at the potluck included carrot soup, a lentil casserole, beautiful salads, a beef stew made from locally grazed beef, homemade breads and yummy mac and cheese. The color on the plate was beautiful. Her photos of the potluck are below. .JPG)
