Air Pollution
Faith Connections
The sacredness of air drifts throughout the Bible. In the opening phrases of Genesis, God sweeps over the waters to create light. In the second verse, God gives the first humans and all of creation the “breath of life.” The New Testament also speaks of the air when Jesus tells Nicodemus, “The wind blows where it chooses, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know the sound of it or where it goes.” (John 3:8). The very act of taking a breath is a sacred gift from God that we take for granted and yet our very life depends on it. Our activities, both indoors and outdoors are dirtying the air- a holy source of life. Those that contribute least to the pollution are often times the most hurt by it: communities of color, people in developing nations, the poor, the elderly and the children.
