Global Warming Impacts

There is scientific consensus that human activities are causing carbon emissions that are increasing the Earth's tempature. Some of the impacts of global warming are already being felt, but the major impacts are still yet to be felt.

  • Hurricanes: Recent studies indicate that the number and intensity of hurricanes has increased because of global warming. For information on the impacts of Hurricane Katrina, click here.
  • Food Producation: Global warming is expected to impact food production especially in places like Africa
  • Ice Sheets and Sea Level Rise: Greenland and Antarctica support massive amounts of ice that could potentially raise sea level by tens of feet. Studies show that there is a decrease in ice mass.
  • Wildfires: Wildfires in the Western US have gotten dramatically worse and a recent study in Science links western wildfires and global warming.
  • Coral Reefs: Warmer waters have devasted reefs throughout the Caribean, the worst bleaching event on record.

Global Warming and Poverty

As people of faith, we understand our responsibilities to care for all of God's people, including those who suffer the most. Experts anticipate that global warming's impacts--drought, floods, disease, and severe weather--will impact those living in poverty the most. Our call as Christians is to tend to deliver justice by addressing the threat of global warming.
