Climate Change in Europe
Wind has been used as a source of energy for thousands of years. More than 800 wind turbines are in operation in Sweden today. Lillgrund will be Sweden’s biggest wind farm and one of the largest in the world. The wind farm is expected to generate enough electricity to meet the demand of more than 60,000 homes. Construction work started in the spring of 2006, and the farm will be ready to generate power for 60, 000 homes at the end of 2007.
Wind energy is an ideal renewable energy because:
- it is a pollution-free, infinitely sustainable form of energy
- it doesn’t require fuel
- it doesn’t create greenhouse gasses
- it doesn’t produce toxic or radioactive waste.
FACTS:
• In Sweden, wind power meets 0.7% of the electricity consumption (pre Lillgrund)
• In Denmark, wind power meets 16.8% of the electricity consumption
• In Germany, wind power meets 6% of the electricity consumption
