Carbon Reduction Campaign: Individuals - How To Install Low Flow Showerheads and Aerators
1.Determine if you need to install faucet aerators or a more efficient shower head.
- Faucet Aerators - Look at your faucet. if you already have one, the side will tell you how many gallons per minute it releases. For bathroom sinks, get an aerator that uses no more than 1.5 gpm. For kitchen sinks get an aerator that uses no more than 2.2 gpm (gallons per minute).
- Shower Heads - Set a 2 qt sauce pan on the floor of the shower and position it in the middle of the shower stream. If it takes fewer than 12 seconds to fill the pan, you need to purchase a more efficient showerhead.
2. Purchasing: You should be able to purchase aerators and efficient shower heads at any local hardware store. Check with you local utility company, some provide free aerators, or offer other incentives.
3. Installation:
- Faucet Aerators
1. Apply a single wrap of white pipe tape around the threads of the new aerator
2. Put the rubber washer inside the end and screw it on to the faucet by hand
3. Run water to test and tighten if it leaks.
- Shower Heads - Instillation instructions will depend on the type of shower head you purchase. Refer to the instructions that come with the shower head.
