Carbon Reduction Campaign: Congregations - How to Install LED Exit Signs
1. Determine what kinds of exit signs are currently being used. If you need help see the ENERGY STAR fact sheet on LED exit signs. Even if you are using exit signs lit by CFLs, you should still consider switching to LED signs which use three times less energy than exit signs lit by CFLs.
2. Find out if your congregations exit signs have integrated emergency lighting. If so, you can replace it with a combined LED exit sign emergency lighting unit or install emergency light separately.
3. Consult local building codes or building officials to determine what the specific requirements for exit signs in your area are. There may be specific color or battery backup requirements.
4. Find out what voltage you need. LED signs are available that are compatible with 120 volt or 277 volt power. Many models have variable voltage and will operate on both voltage levels.
5. Look for LED exit signs where LEDs are wired in parallel rather than signs with LEDs wired in series because if LEDS are wired in a series, when one LED burns out the entire sign will cease to be illuminated.
6. You may decide to purchase a LED retrofit kit rather than a new LED sign. If you do, check to make sure that it provides adequate illumination, and know that when the light eventually burns out it could be replaced with an incandescent bulb
7. Installation is simple and you should be able to install an LED exit sign if you know how to install a light switch. If you have any questions, consult a professional.
