Carbon Reduction Campaign: How to Install CFLs
1. CFLs come in all shapes and sizes and will fit in to existing light sockets, making installation easy now. Replace lights used most frequently with CFLs. This will provide the most energy savings.
2. CFLs can be purchased at almost any retail outlet or hardware store. Most stores offer a variety of CFLs at various prices. Look for low mercury models. Click here to find a store near you.
3. Make sure you buy the right bulb for each outlet. Pay attention to labels and look for the wattage replacement value. You will see things like "60 watt replacement." For more help on choosing the right bulb click here.
4. If a light is connected to a dimmer or three way socket fixture, a CFL designed to work with those applications is required. Look for this specification on the label.
5. Install CFLs the same way you would install incandescent bulbs
6. Spread the word. Let the entire congregation know about the steps their church is taking to become better stewards of God's Creation. Make an announcement during the service and post information about CFLs in the church bulletin our news letter. Be sure to include the congregation's results from the carbon reduction campaign and encourage members to sign up individually.
7. When a CFL burns out (several years from now) make sure it is disposed of properly. Take advantage of local recycling options. Check out www.epa.gov/bulbrecycling or www.earth911.org.
