Keeping the King Legacy Alive
Environmental Racism remains an issue

As we honor Dr. King this week, and as we approach Black History Month in February, let us remember King's legacy of fearlessly challenging the systems of injustice that keep people in poverty and marginalizes people of color. One issue that today affects marginalized communities around the country, and throughout the world, is environmental justice or environmental racism - the dumping of toxic waste in communities of color. People of color suffer disproportionately from a wide variety of health crises-high rates of asthma, lead poisoning, cancer, birth defects and lupus. All of these problems are connected to toxic waste in our environment. Learn more about these issues by downloading the NCC's free resources: Environmental Racism: An Ecumenical Study Guide and Mindful Living: Human Health, Pollution and Toxics.

HarperOne to Release "Green" Bible

HarperOne will release The Green Bible (NRSV) in the Fall of 2008. This will be the first Bible to highlight how the scriptures teach the importance of caring for God's Creation. The Green Bible will focus on creation care, with input from leading Christian conservationists, theologians, and practicioners, showing that creation care is not just a calling, but a lifestyle. This green-letter edition will highlight the verses and passages focused on creation care and include a series of essays by leading thinkers, teachers and writers, as well as a comprehensive "green trail guide," through scripture, a survey of Christian historical figures and their approach to creation care, and a green concordance. It will also be produced using environmentally sensitive materials including special paper and covers.

Eco-Palms available now for Palm Sunday
Make Eco-Justice Part of the Easter season

This year for Palm Sunday, make sure that the Palm branches your church purchase have been harvested in an environmental and socially just way. Unfortunately for the communities where these palms are harvested, palm fronds do not always represent the same jubilation they do for us. This year, PC(USA), Lutheran World Relief, Catholic Relief Services and the University of Minnesota are offering congregations the option of purchasing responsibly harvested eco-palm branches for Palm Sunday. The palms come from communities in Mexico and Guatemala where workers are paid fairly and engage in sustainable harvesting in order to protect the local ecosystem. Earth Day '08: Poverty of Climate Change
New Earth Day Resource to focus on Poverty and Climate Change

As people of faith, addressing climate change is justice issue. Water scarcity, drought, crop failure, increased disease, and flooding are just a few of the impacts those living in poverty around the world are and will feel from global climate change. This Earth Day, the National Council of Churches Eco-Justice Programs is marking Earth Day Sunday (the Sunday closest to Earth Day) by recognizing the interconnectedness of poverty and climate change and offering a resource for worship, adult study, and youth activities. Copies will be available February 1, 2008. To obtain a copy visit www.nccecojustice.org To pre-order a copy contact the Eco-Justice Program office at info@nccecojustice.org or 202-481-6943.
